Turkey and Iraq are planning to sign an agreement to enhance the military cooperation. The cooperation is expected to be on training and logistics for the Iraqi Army (IA). Turkish Deputy Chief of Military Staff Hasan Igsiz visited Iraq on 4th March 2009. He met with Iraqi Defense Minister Abdulkadir Cassim, Chief of Military Staff Babakir Zebari and US General Raymond Odierno. In these meetings the main issues discussed were further cooperation between the Turkish Military and Iraqi Army, and cooperation against the PKK terrorist organization.

About a question on his visit to Iraq, General Hasan Igsiz stated that "We paid a visit to Iraq according to invitation of Iraqi Defense Minister. We talked about enhancement of military relations along with the political relations between parties. They stated their expectations about training and logistics from the Turkish Armed Forces. In return, we responded that we can expand the existing cooperation in case of signing a written accord between parties. Both sides agree with the necessity of such agreement as soon as possible. Moreover, Iraq reiterated their support to Turkey on the PKK issue"

It is still unknown whether the agreement will be ready for Turkish President Abdullah Gul's visit to Iraq in the end of March. Yet both Abdullah Gul's visit to Iraq and Hillary Clinton's visit to Turkey gives positive signals about such agreement.
