Thursday, 5 March 2009Amid debates on the ethics of human cloning, an Italian doctor, Severino Antinori came out with a traumatic claim. The Italian doctor cloned three people using the technique nine years ago, according to Agence France-Presse.
"I helped give birth to three children with the human cloning technique, said" Severino Antinori, a prominent gynecologist. The doctor continued as: "Cells from the three fathers, who were sterile, allowed the cloning to be carried out. The women's egg cells were impregnated in a laboratory through a method called "nuclear transfer. It involved two boys and a girl who are nine years old today. They were born healthy and they are in excellent health now." Antinori did not give any further information other than the region (Eastern Europe) where the children live.
Nuclear transfer involves removing the DNA from an unfertilized egg and injecting the nucleus, which contains the DNA. This was how Dolly the sheep was cloned. "An improvement" was added to the human procedure for better results, according to Antinori.
The Italian doctor is known for his work allowing post-menopausal women to have children. Antinori sparked another controversy in Italy by announcing that he would artificially impregnate a woman whose husband is in an irreversible coma. It would be the first procedure of its kind in Italy if successful.
