Tuesday, 17 February 2009ANKARA - Turkey's Energy Minister Hilmi Güler said a new regime in electricity market would be launched on March 19 where the government would make purchases from producers through bilateral contracts.
Holding a press conference on electricity purchases in Ankara on Monday, Güler said the new regime which would be launched with the tender on March 16th, would allow electricity producers to make contracts for longer terms and help boost and enhance investments.
ÇaÄŸlayan said that investors would be able to see as long as four years ahead and make investments accordingly. He said this would also provide a secure market.
ÇaÄŸlayan said with the new regime, their original intention was to create competition in the market, noting that the prices shaped by this competition would favour the consumers.
"When there is competition, everybody (producers) will arm wrestle. Of course, our people, industrialists and citizens with low income, exporters will benefit from this," said ÇaÄŸlayan.
ÇaÄŸlayan said consumption of electricity in Turkey increased by 8.5 percents, noting that electricity demand in Turkey was 8 folds of the demand in Europe. He said investments continued with haste, adding that the energy sector was not effected by the crisis.
Güler said they had some extensive projects in store, noting that consumers may in the future purchase their electricity directly from the producers.
