Published earlier today, open letter from the United People's Movement of Kyrgyzstan or UPM asked President Kurmanbek Bakiyev to step down of his own volition. The UPM is a coalition of practically all forces of political opposition in Kyrgyzstan.
The UPM was established on December 24, 2008. Practically all major forces of the opposition signed the merger agreement. Objectives of the UPM include Bakiyev's early resignation, installation of a coalition government, and adoption of a new Constitution.
Asking the president to resign, the opposition argues that he has never become guarantor of the Constitution, human rights, and civil freedoms. "We demand that the authorities put an end to UPM leaders harassment. We demand resignations and prosecution of the prosecutor general, interior minister, and National Security State Committee chairman for abuse of law and ministering to the Family." (translated from Kyrgyz by Ferghana.Ru news agency)
Along with everything else, the UPM advises the president to resign for bringing the country to economic ruin. As far as the opposition is concerned, Bakiyev must apologize to the people.
