Gas Meeting Could Bring Ukraine, Russia To Table |

|
Thursday, 15 January 2009Russian and Ukrainian officials may hold a government-level meeting on January 17 in an effort to resolve a gas dispute that has cut supplies to Europe as freezing temperatures grip broad swaths of the continent.
The office of Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliya Tymoshenko said Tymoshenko and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone late on January 14 and agreed to hold the high-level talks. It was not clear whether the meeting would be between Tymoshenko and Putin, or other ministers.
Also on January 14, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko rejected a Russian proposal to hold a summit meeting with all European gas-importing countries the same day in Moscow as not suitable.
Russia and Ukraine are blaming each other for the halt in Russian gas supplies to Europe. The cutoff came less than a week after Russia stopped delivering gas to Ukraine itself on January 1over a payments dispute.
The European Union has said it would advise European gas companies and EU member states to pursue legal action if gas supplies are not restored quickly.
