Wednesday, 14 January 2009Integration of Western Balkans countries remains high on the agenda of the Czech Republic as EU Presidency holder, despite the problems the Union is faced with.
"The historic unification and stabilization of the European continent is not possible without the integration of the Western Balkans, which includes Macedonia", said Czech ambassador to Macedonia, Jozef Braun at Wednesday's press conference regarding the Czech Presidency priorities.
He stressed that the Czech Presidency has three priorities: economy, energy and climate changes. "Europe without Borders" is the logo of the Presidency, which the Czech Republic took over from France on January 1.
"The Czech Republic takes over the Presidency in an exceptionally difficult period, when we are faced with enormous problems related to gas supplies, Gaza conflict, as well as the financial crisis, which will result in economic and social consequences in 2009. Still, despite the difficulties, I am convinced that we will continue to strengthen solidarity, mutual respect, and promotion of democracy throughout Europe, which includes the Republic of Macedonia", added Braun.
Ambassador Braun, along with ambassadors of France and Sweden, Bernard Valero and Lars Freden respectively, and Euro-Ambassador Erwan Fouere unanimously confirmed that the crucial priority for Macedonia are the upcoming March elections, whereas institutions and political parties are expected to fulfill citizens' expectations for peaceful, fair and democratic elections.
"We all expect the elections to be held without any problems, because this is an EU candidate-country and elections should be organized in line with European democratic procedures. This will be an enormous challenge regarding the country's European perspective, but also for the good of the two million Macedonian citizens", said French ambassador Valero.
Pertaining to the visa liberalization, Macedonia can count on Czech support if conditions are met and taking into account that the country is a regional leader regarding the issue.
"We will be more than happy if you meet the conditions for visa liberalization during our presidency. The European Commission will have to verify this", underlined Czech ambassador Braun.
