Unit 2 of Bulgaria's Bobov Dol Thermal Power Plant was restarted Friday in order to make up for the country's increased electricity consumption because of the shortage of natural gas.
Each of the three units of the Bobov Dol Plant has a production capacity of 210 MW. Unit 3 was shut down on December 31, 2007, according to an agreement with the EU because it lacked a sulfur purification facility, and its greenhouse gas emissions were above the allowed.
Even though the construction of needed eco-facility is still going on, the Bobov Dol Plant had received permission from the Bulgarian authorities to restart Unit 3 because of the shortage of natural gas caused by the Russia-Ukraine gas prices dispute.
The Bobov Dol Thermal Power Plant uses lignite coal from eleven mines in southwest Bulgaria. In 2008 it was purchased by the Bulgarian energy tycoon Hristo Kovachki.
