Ramallah – Ma’an – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asserted on Monday that priority would be given to stopping Israeli aggression on Gaza immediately and without conditions.
Abbas' comments came during a meeting held in the central West Bank city of Ramallah on Tuesday with International Quartet Middle East envoy Tonny Blair and deputy Russian Foreign Minister Alexander Sultanov.
Chief negotiator of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Saeb Erekat, said in a statement following the meeting that President Abbas would head to the UN Security Council seeking a resolution to stop the Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip.
Erekat welcomed Egyptian steps toward resuming Palestinian national dialogue in efforts to unite rival factions in the West Bank and Gaza.
For his part, Blair said the Quartet has been contacting every side in efforts to bring an end to the disastrous situation in the Strip. He mentioned three basic steps the Quartet seeks to achieve; reaching a ceasefire that all sides can respect; creating a means for contiguity between the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and allowing all kinds of humanitarian aid into Gaza in order to ease suffering there.
For his part, the deputy Russian foreign minister said Russia would offer needed support in order to halt the bloodshed and create an appropriate atmosphere for the peace process. He pointed out that it could not take place under artillery fire. He stated the necessity of international intervention to find a way out of the current impasse.
“We have visited President Abu Mazin (Abbas) because he represents all the Palestinian people. We thanked him on behalf of the Russian government for his help in getting the Russian citizens out of the Gaza City," as well. |
