Monday, 5 January 2009Bethlehem – Ma’an – The Palestinian Authority (PA) will disburse salaries to its employees on Tuesday, said Bassam Zakarneh, the head of the public employees union.
Zakarneh said the union is following up with the PA in hopes of raising salaries in light of tough political and economic times.
The PA employs over 100,000 people in the West Bank and the Hamas-governed Gaza Strip. Since the Hamas takeover in June 2007, PA employees in Gaza have still been paid although many do not report to work in order to show loyalty to the Ramallah based PA and undermine the Hamas-run local government.
