Turkey's non-permanent membership to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) started as of January 1, 2009.

The council is expected to hold the first meeting of 2009 next week, on January 5. Therefore, Turkey's membership will actually start on such date.

Turkey became a non-permanent member of UNSC in a voting held on October 17, 2008. Turkey's two-year mission will end on December 31, 2010.

The United Nations Security Council is the branch of the UN charged with the maintenance of international peace and security. The council has five permanent members, including France, China, Russian Federation, United Kingdom and the United States.
