Friday, 26 December 2008Bethlehem – Ma’an – An Israeli military court at Ofer detention center on Thursday sentenced Ahmad Sa’adat, Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) member and Secretary-General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), to 30 years imprisonment.
Sa’adat released a message on Thursday before his trial asserting that he did not recognize the authority of the Israeli military courts.
“I don’t stand to defend myself before your court, as I emphasized before. I don’t recognize this court, which is an extension of occupation which international law considers illegal. Our people have the right to resist occupation, and this court is based on the British emergency law of 1945 which is worse than Nazi laws,” Sa’adat’s message read.
The message added, “This court is one of the tools of oppression used against the Palestinian people and resistance. Such courts indicate the occupation’s failure to impose an illegal situation on the Palestinian people. I am proud of my affiliation to the Palestinian national movement, resistance and the just struggle to gain all inalienable Palestinian rights. I am proud of being elected secretary-general of the PFLP, and all I regret is that I could not continue with my duties because of my detention.”
