Tuesday, 23 December 2008The Bulgarian engineer who was abducted in Nigeria on November 21 was freed on Sunday, and is currently kept at a local police department.
The news was announced Tuesday by the spokesman of Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry Dragovest Goranov, who also said the man would meet soon with representatives of Bulgaria's embassy in Nigeria.
The Bulgarian engineer, whose name has not been revealed, was released thanks to the intervention of the Nigerian authorities.
In Goranov's words, the ransom of USD 4,2 M that the abductors had demanded had not been paid. However, he did not specify how exactly the authorities had achieved the release of the man.
The 52-year-old Bulgarian engineer works in Nigeria for a local subcontractor to an oil company. No information is available about the armed group who abducted him.
This is the third case of a kidnapped Bulgarian worker in Nigeria. The first such incident happened in January 2006, and another one followed in July 2007.
All three cases have ended with the release of the kidnapped Bulgarians but the Bulgarian Foreign Minister had warned repeatedly against trips to Nigeria.
