An international conference on the "Use of Internet and learning-resource materials in science, education, culture and business" has opened in Ferghana.

Delegates from Russia, the United States, Germany, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are taking part in the event organized by the National Library of the Republic of Uzbekistan named after Alisher Navoi and Tashkent University of Information Technology.

Pursuant to the Resolution of the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karmov of 20 June 2006 "on organization of learning-resource materials supply to the population of the republic" Uzbekistan pays special attention to the development of information technology, particularly in the sphere of library services.

Information-resource centres established at higher educational institutions and public schools unite more than 15,000 libraries across the country. Their fund makes up over 15 million copies of study, study-methodological, reference, fiction and scientific-technical literature. At this time efforts are given to create and develop electronic libraries, systematize information resources and prepare and train the staff to use and manage this system.

The purpose of the conference is to activate the cooperation of library and information-resource centres, higher educational institutions, and archives in the process of using the Internet and electronic information technologies in science, education, culture, and business.

Speakers at the conference, the Director of the National Library of Uzbekistan A. Umarov, the Director of the Republican Information-Library Centre A. Eshmatov, and others noted that Uzbekistan has implemented some major projects to integrate new information and communication technology. Special role in this is given to the activity of information-resource centres.

During the individual sessions reports were delivered on the development of information-library centres, provision of new services involving computer technology, corporate systems of fast information exchange.

During the conference the issues concerning the creation of a single electronic catalogue of information-resource centres' network, and cooperation and experience-sharing among regional information-resource centres were addressed.
