A reception has been held the Embassy of Uzbekistan Kuwait on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of the independence of Uzbekistan. Invited to the reception were the representatives of the legislative and executive government branches, socio-political and business circles of the country, the diplomatic corps accredited in Kuwait, and media.

Among the special honoured guests were the Minister of Information Sheikh Sabah Al-Haled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and the Mayor of the city of Al-Kuwait Sheikh Ali Al-Jabir Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.

During the event brief information was present on the socio-economic reforms taking place in the country, its achievements in the years of independence, as well as the colourful palette of Uzbek-Kuwaiti bilateral relations.

The event was widely publicized in the main media of Kuwait, the newspapers of Avan, Al-Siyasa, Al-Anba, Al-Dar, Al-Ray, Al-Vatan, Al-Vasat, Al-Jarida, Arab Times, and Kuwait Times, Jahon reported.

"The Minister of Information of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Haled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah attended a reception hosted by the diplomatic mission of Uzbekistan. He emphasized the aspiration of both countries toward further expansion of bilateral cooperation in different spheres," an article titled "Embassy of Uzbekistan marks 17th anniversary of Independence Day" published by Avan newspaper said.

The topic of Uzbekistan's independence was widely covered by the Al-Siyasa newspaper. An illustrated article titled "Minister of Information participates in celebration of national holiday of Uzbekistan" quoted the Minister of Information of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Haled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah stating: "The relations between Kuwait and Uzbekistan are built on a solid foundation and are developing dynamically."

"We hope for the development of cooperation and expansion of friendly relations" was the title of an article published by Al-Anba that contained extensive information on Uzbekistan accompanied by colourful photo-materials.

"In the recent years our country has gone through some difficult times on the way to development. However under the direction of President Islam Karimov it has managed to reconstruct and revive all spheres of economy, integrate into the world community, become a full-valued member of reputed international organizations, and establish diplomatic relations with other members of the world community. Today Uzbekistan is a sovereign republic, building a jural state on the foundation of commonly accepted democratic principles of respect of human rights and freedoms, and social justice. This is a country with an industrially-developed economy in Central Asia. The spheres of aircraft-building, car-building, agriculture, textiles, machine-building, metallurgy, electronic engineering, as well as oil and gas, coal, chemical, food and other industries make up the foundation of a multi-sided economy of Uzbekistan."

The article speaks of the highest resource potential of the country that finds the highest demand in the world market. And this in turn allows it to conduct a successful socially oriented economic policy. From the very first days of independence, thanks to the policy of openness and the favourable investment climate created for local and foreign entrepreneurs, Uzbekistan has attracted substantial investment flow, it says.

Elaborating on the topic of bilateral relations, Al-Dar newspapers wrote about the January 2004 official visit of the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov to Kuwait, during which talks and negotiations created a new impulse for the expansion of cooperation between the two countries.

"One of the major results of this visit was the opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Kuwait in November 2004. The following years the countries' delegations exchanged a series of visits. Thus, in June 2007 Vice Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait Muhammed Sabah Al-Salim Al-Sabah paid an official visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan. The parties signed a Memorandum of Mutual Understanding between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries. In April this year within the frames of the 4th Islamic International Economic Forum the Minister of Foreign Economic Affairs, Investments and Trade of Uzbekistan Mr. Ganiev visited Kuwait. In the late July this year a delegation of Kuwait headed by the Minister of Finance Mustafa Jasim Al-Shimali visited Uzbekistan. The members of the delegation held talks at the Cabinet of Ministers, the Ministry of Foreign Economic Affairs, Investments and Trade and discussed the issues relating to the development of bilateral cooperation between the Ministry and Kuwaiti Investment Agency. The official visit of the Emir of the State of Kuwait to Uzbekistan in July this year became a logical extension of these exchanges in visits," the newspaper wrote.

The Al-Ray newspaper notes the importance of the meetings adding that according to the Minister of Information Sheikh Sabah Al-Haled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah the official visit of the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jabir Al-Sabah to the Republic of Uzbekistan and the agreements reached in Tashkent demonstrated a powerful breakthrough in bilateral relations.

Al-Siyasa newspaper wrote: "During the visit agreements on cooperation, on the establishment of an intergovernmental joint commission, on cooperation in the fields of healthcare and tourism, and memorandums on mutual understanding, on cooperation in the oil and gas sector, on environmental protection and conservation of natural resources were signed. The parties also signed a memorandum on cooperation between the Republic of Uzbekistan and Kuwaiti Fund of Arab Economic Development envisaging the appropriation of the sum of US$12.97 million for the recovery and equipment of the Centre of Cardio-surgery in Uzbekistan."
