Saturday, 18 October 2008British defence officials are investigating reports that 18 women and children were killed in an air strike by NATO forces in southern Afghanistan.
Angry villagers took 18 bodies to the governor's house in the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah. A BBC reporter in Lashkar Gah also said he saw the bodies - three women and the rest children ranging in age from six months to 15.
On Thursday, the NATO-led International Security Force (ISAF) launched a massive campaign against Taliban militants in the Nad Ali district of southern Afghanistan's Helmand, but the deaths of the civilians were reported later in the day.
The growing number of civilian deaths in air strikes in Afghanistan has provoked friction between Afghan president Hamid Karzai and Nato countries.
Karzai have ordered a review of US and Nato tactics, as in August the Afghan government said 90 civilians were killed during a US special forces raid in a village in the western Herat province.
