Tuesday, 10 June 2008Thirty-six years ago on 5 June in Stockholm, Sweden, the UN World Summit on ecology laid the foundation to the Environmental programme aimed at addressing the urgent tasks of protecting the nature. This date is annually marked as an environment protection day.
Each year Uzbekistan marks this date with holding conferences, meetings, exhibitions and contests dedicated to the outstanding tasks on providing for implementation of program on protecting the nature, ecologic balance, increasing the ecological awareness of population.
One of such events was held at the State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan. State Committee of Uzbekistan on Protection of Nature and UNDP organized the sitting, Jahon information agency reported. Senators, lawmakers of the lower chamber, representatives of state and public structures, international organizations, scholars and specialists participated in the event.
According to the Chairman of the Nature Protection Committee B.Alikhonov, Uzbekistan undertakes profound work on stabilizing the ecologic balance, reasonably using the natural resources, decreasing negative impact on environment and introducing the mechanisms of non-waste production. Thanks to these reforms the country adopted over 30 decrees on protection of nature, reasonable utilization of natural resources, and now is implementing more than 350 legal documents.
Uzbekistan undertakes measures envisaged by those programs and projects that resulted in cutting down the volume of hazardous emissions 2.5 times, dumping of polluted water to ponds ÔÇô 2 times.
The sitting also saw the presentation of national report on outcomes of works undertaken for over the years of independence on protecting the environment, various new publications, including the Ecologic atlas of Uzbekistan.
