Monday, 9 June 2008A scientific conference titled "Central Asia facing globalization" was held in the building of the Senate of France, the famous Luxemburg palace in Paris.
The conference was organized by the Senate of France, the editorial of the Passages, a reputed French analytical magazine, and the ADAPes, the Association of this magazine's friends, as well as the Embassy of Uzbekistan in the country.
Among the participants of the conference were the senators and the deputies of the Parliament of France, foreign diplomats, French scientists and experts, specialized in the Central Asian regional affairs, as well as the representatives of the socio-political and business circles, and the media of France.
The conference was opened by the Chairman of the ADAPes Association, the Editor in Chief of the Passages magazine, a renowned French expert in political science Emile Malet who noted the importance and topicality of the objective understanding, realistic evaluation of the events and processes taking place in Central Asia, the region paid high attention to in the foreign policy of the European Union and playing an important role in the global system of international security these days. The expert emphasized that the EU's strategy concerning this region should reflect both the interests of the region as a whole, as well as the positions and development strategies of individual CA states.
Participants of the event familiarized wit the large-scale reforms and transformations taking place in all spheres of Uzbekistan's social life, the democratization of the society, the country's position in respect to the development of the relations with the European Union.
The participants were presented information on the results of the International Conference on the "Problems of maintaining security and sustainable development in Central Asia" held on 29-30 April this year in Tashkent.
The content of the initiatives and recommendations made by Uzbekistan on the resolution of the situation in Afghanistan at the latest summit of NATO/CEAP in Bucharest. The information on the ecological catastrophe of the Aral Sea and Uzbekistan's position concerning rational use of water and energy resources of the transboundary rivers of the region was then presented separately.
The Professor of the New York University M. Ryvkin also spoke at the conference. He spoke of the history and evolution of contemporary development of the Central Asian region in political and economic terms. The Professor pointed out the important geo-strategic role of Uzbekistan in the region, as a key state with substantial human and economic potential.
He noted the efforts being taken by the country's government to ensure security and stability in the region. The American expert evaluated and commented on the position and approaches of the main participants of the process of regulation of the Afghan crisis. He expressed an opinion on the need to involve the potential of all neighbouring states with the aim of development a common strategy of agreed actions with specifically outlined aims and objectives.
Other participants of the conference also commented on the said, and expressed lively interest in the initiatives of Karimov's administration on the settlement of the situation in Afghanistan and establishment of peaceful and stable environment, recovery of the country's economy.
The representatives of the socio-political circles of France expressed their support of the all-round development of the mutually beneficial contacts between the European Union, France in particular, and the Republic of Uzbekistan in all spheres of cooperation.
