Another "train of health" carrying humanitarian aid worth over 76 million soums was sent by the Ecosan International Charitable Organisation and Uzbekistan Railways State Company from the Northern Station of the Capital to the Republic of Karakalpakstan on 26 April.

This train carrying a cargo that included study and fictional literature, study-methodological manuals, correctional literature for the students of special boarding schools, as well as warm clothes, footwear, bedsets, and products of personal hygiene for the total amoun tof over 76 million soums will deliver humanitarian aid to educational, medical and other social objects, school students from needy families, single mothers bringing up children, people with disabilities and other socially vulnerable groups of population of different districts of Karakalpakstan.

With the aim of supporting and providing non-refundable assistance to the population of the Aral Sea area, Ecosan International Organisation regularly sends the trains of health "Ecosan-Uzbek Railways" to this region. It actively involves foreign partners in this project. The embassies of different countries, international organizations accredited in Uzbekistan, particularly the embassies of Germany, Russia, Slovakia, Egypt, Czech Republic, and Iran, Russian Foreign Centre's Uzbek office, UNDP, Counterpart International and other organizations have expressed great interest in this project.

Among the participants of the meeting organized on the occasion of the shipment of the humanitarian aid to the Republic of Karakalpakstan were the Chairman of the Ecosan International Organisation Y. Shadimetov, the Councilor of the Embassy of the Russian Federation, the Chairman of the Russian Foreign Centre's Uzbekistan Office T. Mishukovskaya, the Chairman of the Karakalpakstan Office of the Ecosan International Organisation Sh. Ilyasov, and the staff of the Uzbekiston Temir Yullari State Company.

As noted during the meeting, the humanitarian aid is compiled through the sponsorship support of local and foreign partners, the funds obtained through ecological hashars (community clean-up days), and charitable campaigns. Thus, an ecological hasher was conducted within the frame of the first phase of the Days of Ecology and Health on 1 March.

An Eco-Festival "We ÔÇô for the children of Aral" was conducted on 4 March. This campaign was organized as a closure for the ecological festival "We for the Children of Aral". The importance of this type of events in protection of the interests of youth, its active involvement in the solution of ecological problems and protection of the environment, and its social support will growth with the implementation of the Year of Youth Programme.

During the meeting on behalf of the Government of the Russian Federation the Councilor of the Embassy of the Russian Federation, the Chairman of the Uzbekistan Office of the Russian Foreign Centre T. Mishukovskaya presented humanitarian aid for the schoolchildren of the Republic of Karakalpakstan to the organizers of the charitable campaign.

The aid included 3,000 copies of literature worth 26 million soums. It was noted that the Embassy of the Russian Federation constantly participates in the humanitarian campaigns; every year the children of the Aral Sea region are provided free trips to different recreational camps. In 2008 this traditional act will be repeated.

The Chairman of the Ecosan International Ecology and Health Organisation Y. Shadimetov said one of the priority areas of Ecosan's activity was the implementation of the projects in the Aral Sea region targeted to reduce the effects of the worsening ecological conditions on the health and welfare of the population, particularly women and children as well as worsening social, ecological and infrastructural changes. Unlike the other projects aimed to solve technical and hydromeliorative aspects of the Aral Sea crisis, the Ecosan's projects are aimed to support the people.

As an example, the Chairman mentioned the train of health project, the ASPERA project implemented in partnership with UNICEF on the ecological and regional assistance to women and children of the Aral Sea area, the international missions of the Ecosan driven by the motto "the problems of the Aral and the surrounding area imperative for international community", the projects on water supply and sanitary, the tourism and ecotourism in the Aral Sea region project, and others.

Since 1997 over 40 Ecosan "trains of health" carrying humanitarian aid have been sent to the Aral Sea with the assistance of foreign and local donors. The Ecosan trains of health have also become an important tool in provision of high quality medical assistance to the population.

Ecosan's missions in the Aral Sea area assisted by the embassies of different countries and international organizations, including the international financial institutions such as the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Asian Development Bank, and a number of international eco-forums, conferences and eco-festivals held in the countries of Europe and Asia have helped raise the awareness of the international community about the global ecological problem in the region and attract humanitarian aid.

Ecosan International Organisation continues to work to provide material and other forms of assistances to satisfy the urgent humanitarian needs of the socially vulnerable and needy groups of population particularly in the regions of Karakalpakstan and Khorezm.
