The Taliban has claimed responsibility for a roadside bombing in Afghanistan that killed the son of the new Dutch military commander there.

Lieutenant Dennis van Uhm was one of two soldiers killed in the attack Friday. His father, General Peter van Uhm, took command of the Dutch military in Afghanistan on Thursday.

The Dutch military says there is no indication that van Uhm was specifically targeted.

The roadside bombing took place north of the Dutch military base in the southern province of Uruzgan.

Also Friday, three Afghan civilians died in a roadside blast in Logar province, south of the capital, Kabul.

The death toll from a suicide bombing at a mosque on Thursday has climbed to 24.

The blast happened in front of a mosque in southwestern Afghanistan.
