At least 44 school children died after a bus ran off the road and plunged into a canal in Western India.

The accident occurred near the town of Vadodara in the western state of Gujarat, CNN reported.

Four people were rescued and other four are missing, authorities reported, adding that investigators have not determined yet why the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The state-owned public bus was carrying more than 60 children and other passengers.
