Friday, 18 February 2005Authorities in Iraq say suicide-bomb blasts that disrupted Friday prayers at two Shi'ite Muslim mosques in Baghdad have killed at least 15 people and wounded scores of others.
The attacks came on the eve of Ashoura, a solemn holy day for Shi'ite Muslims. Similar attacks on Ashoura last year killed more than 170 worshippers.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for today's explosions. Religious authorities launched an urgent appeal for blood donations and aid for those maimed by the bombs.
The more serious of the two attacks was in the southern Baghdad neighborhood of Dora. The suicide bomber who blew himself outside the (al-Khadimain) mosque there killed at least 14 people.
The second explosion occurred outside a mosque in another Shi'ite area in western Baghdad. That attack killed one person. |
