Friday, 18 February 2005Police in the Republic of Ireland say they have arrested seven people and seized a large amount of money in connection with a $50 million bank robbery in neighboring Northern Ireland.
Officials say police seized almost $4 million following the arrests in Dublin and in the southwestern city of Cork.
They say the sum included almost $120,000 in notes issued by the Belfast bank where last December's robbery, believed to be Britain's largest-ever, took place.
Government and police officials in Ireland and Britain have accused the Irish Republican Army, which wants to unite Northern Ireland with the republic, of carrying out the attack. The IRA and its political wing, Sinn Fein, have denied any involvement in the heist.
