The former Peruvian spy chief, Vladimiro Montesinos, is planning to sue Spanish Judge Baltasar Garzon.

Montesinos' lawyer Estela Valdivia said her client was accusing the judge of libel and attempting to destabilise the South American continent.

In a recent book, Judge Garzon claimed Montesinos had admitted bribing Ecuador's former president, Abdala Bucaram, to ratify a 1998 peace deal.

Montesinos, serving 15 years for corruption, denies the admission.

The current Ecuadoran government is sending a commission to Peru to investigate Judge Garzon's allegation.

Montesinos was jailed for 15 years in 2004 for embezzlement, conspiracy and corruption.

The close aide of ex-President Alberto Fujimori was already serving a nine-year sentence and faces a series of trials.

A Peruvian court found him guilty of paying millions of dollars in bribes to TV executives to secure their support for Mr Fujimori's candidacy in 2000.

Montesinos sparked the corruption scandal that brought down the government in 2000, when a video apparently showed him bribing opposition politician Luis Alberto Kouri.

Judge Garzon is renowned for his investigations and has taken on a number of high profile cases - including the attempt to extradite Chile's General Augusto Pinochet from London to Spain in the 1990s.
