Labor chairman Shimon Peres Wednesday scoffed at ministers who have been threatened in recent days, accusing them of "getting hysterical" unnecessarily.
"No one in this country has gotten more death threats than me," Peres said. "People have thrown sticks at me, they have thrown stones at me and they even put a bomb under my wife Sonia's car and I never made a big deal out of it."
Transport Minister Meir Sheetrit (Likud), who is responsible for the implementation law and has been sent death threats, said he felt that the atmosphere in the country was reminiscent of the period before the murder of Yitzhak Rabin.
"The writing is on the wall," Sheetrit said. But he said that "no threats or bullies" would stop him from advancing the peace process. "There will be no Jews living in the Gaza Strip by the end of 2005," he said.
Sheetrit complained that he had received no report from the security services on its efforts to track down the people who sent him the threatening letters. "They are not doing enough to catch those people," he said.
He said he was sure that the perpetrators were not residents of the Gaza Strip. |
