Austria Proposed Special Status for Turkey |
30 November 2004Two weeks ahead of the December 17 summit of the European Union, those demanding to offer a special status to Turkey are increasing. Austrian Prime Minister Wolfgang Schl+-ssel said that an option other than full membership should be present in the text to be announced about Turkey on that day.
Schl+-ssel said that they prefered an open-ended negotiating process to be implemented by EU to Turkey and "This open-endedness should be expressed very clearly."
French daily Le Figaro said that the draft about Turkey in EU demanded from Turkey to recognize the Greek Cypriot Administration and to settle the Aegean problems. The daily said that "To satisfy Greece, Turkey will have to give away some pieces of land in the Aegean Sea."
According to the daily, Greece is carrying out a very active initiative behind the scenes and had the EU include into the draft, the recognition of Southern Cyprus and settlement of Aegean problems.
