Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Hilmi G+-ler announced that they aim at providing natural gas to all 81 provinces in 2009.
The activities of the institutions of the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry under the Justice and Development Party (AKP) rule is released in 6 booklets. The Ministry authorities said that booklets will be distributed to the ministries, public enterprises and institutions and the press.
In the prefaces of the booklets, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Hilmi G+-ler wrote some articles concerning the achievements in the natural gas industry, and said that the natural gas, which was introduced in Turkey in 1987 with the 500 thousand cubic meters of imports from the Soviet Union, today appeared to be a significant source of energy with 23 percent share in the energy consumption, ranking right after oil and coal.
G+-ler stated that 12 billion dollars of public funds are needed to make the necessary investments so as to satisfy the natural gas demand, which will be 55 billion cubic meters in 2010 and 82 billion cubic meters in 2020 according to the demand projections that are done within the context of Natural Energy Plan. G+-ler added that this amount will reach 30 billion dollars together with the investment regarding the use of the consumers.
Minister G+-ler continued: "Our government initiated a huge investment move so as to increase the use of natural gas in accordance with its original aim of use and provided natural gas for 35 more provinces. Before our government, natural gas was being supplied in only 9 provinces. The given investment movement will as well continue in 2007, and natural gas will be supplied in 14 more provinces. Thus, the number of the provinces that attained natural gas in our period of rule will reach 58. Moreover, we aim at supplying natural gas to 9 more provinces in 2008 and 14 more in 2009 and thus providing natural gas in every single province of Turkey."
Underlining that Turkey has billion kWh/year gross, 216 billion kWh/year technical and 129,4 billion kWh/year economic potential in hydraulics, G+-ler said that 35 percent of the given potential is in production stage, 8 percent is under construction and that the remaining 57 percent of the given potential is in the stage of project preparation. Expressing that the potential in wing energy is at least 88.000 MW and that the 10 MW of this total potential is predicted to be economical, G+-ler said that 21.2 MW of the installed capacity is currently operating, 39 projects with total installed capacity of 1,460 MW are licensed and the applications with total 2750 MW of installed capacity are being evaluated. Minister G+-ler maintained that the technical potential of solar energy is 87 billions of Ton Equivalent Oil (TEO's), geothermal potential is 31.500 MW and the biomass potential is around 15 million TEO's.
Minister G+-ler explained that the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) is pursuing research and production activities both in the country and abroad so as to satisfy the supply security of petroleum and said: "We track with pleasure that the TPAO is actively continuing operations in abroad, especially in Central Asia Turkish Republics, Middle East and North African countries, which have rich petroleum reserves."
Underlining that they give importance on the mining sector, G+-ler argued that the share of the mining sector in the GDP, which is around 1.4 percent, is low as compared with the current potential and added that the government has been working to develop the mining sector continuously as of the first day of their period of rule. "We aim at 8 billion dollars of production in the mining sector till the end of the next 5-year period." said G+-ler.
