Wednesday, 21 June 2006LONDON, June 21 (IranMania) - Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei renewed calls for US-led troops to leave neighbouring Iraq, a day after it was announced that Australian, British and Japanese troops were to quit the southern province of Muthanna, AFP reported.
"Iraq's current security problems will only be resolved if the occupiers leave and the security issues are handed over to Iraqi people and government," state television quoted Khamenei as saying.
He was speaking in a meeting with visiting Iraqi Shiite politician Abdel Aziz al-Hakim.
Hakim, who has been in Tehran for eight days, heads the Supreme Council of Islamic Revolution in Iraq, a formerly Iran-based religious party that forms part of the main Shiite alliance that leads the government.
Iran is to host a conference on security in Iraq next month, gathering Iraq's neighbours, Egypt, the Arab League and the Organisation of the Islamic Conference.
