Turkey calls for reenforcement of cultural bonds with Iran |

Wednesday, 21 June 2006 Visiting Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Atilla Koc here Wednesday said Iran and Turkey should endeavor to strengthen their bilateral cultural commonalties.
Speaking to IRNA in an exclusive interview, Koc said the two nations should increase their interaction to better acquint themselves with their cultural commonalties.
He said Tehran and Ankara have every reason to enjoy a high-level of cultural relations, adding that a region extending from the Middle East to the Caucasus has very special significance because it is home to "countries extremely rich in culture." The minister urged states in the region to boost their cultural ties by encouraging greater cultural and tourist interaction.
Asked about the possible impact of Turkey's joining the European Union, Koc pointed out that while Turkey has an eastern culture it has nonetheless been exposed to Western culture for over 200 years.
He stressed that Turkey's entry into the EU would create a fascinating mixture of eastern and western culture while preserving eastern cultural traditions in the country.
