EU to Give Turkey Negotiation Date |
9 November 2004Bill Emmot, the Editor in Chief of The Economist, predicted that the European Union would decide to begin accession negotiations with Turkey on December 17th. Emmot also believes that EU countries will be able to convince their constituencies to accept Turkey as a member country over the next 10 years.
In his article, he attributes the past couple of years of Turkey's economic stability to the implementation of new reforms. Emmot exhorts Turkey to sustain the stability.
Emmot noticed that the Chinese economy was becoming stronger than the European economy and asked, "Why can't Turkey display the same performance?" He evaluated International Monetary Fund (IMF)-supported economic program in Turkey as a success.
