Friday, 16 June 2006The European Union says it is close to agreeing a deal with its Middle East Quartet partners - the UN, the US and Russia - on Palestinian aid. The European Commission, the EU's executive, has been drawing up plans for a funding mechanism.
This would aim to channel aid to needy Palestinians while bypassing the Hamas-led government.
The militant group is deemed a terrorist organisation by both the EU and the US.
EU External Affairs Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said: "We are very close to an agreement."
