Tuesday, 13 June 2006LONDON, June 13 (IranMania) - According to an AFP report, European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana said he expects a response from Tehran this week to an offer of incentives for Iran to stop enriching uranium.
Solana said he had given no specific deadline to Iran's top nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani, whom he met during a visit to Tehran on June 6.
"But I told Mr Larijani we expect a response in a reasonable period of time," he said, adding that this meant about two weeks from the time they met, or "any time now .. about this week," he said.
In Tehran, Solana presented a package of proposals drawn up by Britain, France and Germany and backed by the United States, Russia and China in a bid to defuse the crisis over Iran's nuclear plans.
The package contained incentives for Tehran to suspend work which makes nuclear reactor fuel or, in highly refined form, atom bomb material.
Tehran says its nuclear program is to generate electricity but Washington and the EU fear this is a cover for developing atomic weapons. They are threatening UN Security Council sanctions if Iran does not cooperate.
