Iranian, Chinese presidents to hold talks: spokesman |

Tuesday, 13 June 2006Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Chinese counterpart, Hu Jintao, are to hold a meeting in Beijing on the sidelines of the sixth summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) due to open in China's eastern port city of Shanghai on Thursday.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Jiang Yu made the disclosure to news reporters at his weekly press conference.
President Ahmadinejad will leave Tehran for Beijing, China on Wednesday to attend the sixth SCO summit.
Jiang said that President Hu is scheduled to hold talks with all senior officials of the SCO's six member states and its observers.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is an inter-governmental organization founded in Shanghai on June 15, 2001 by six countries -- China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
Iran, Pakistan, India and Mongolia have observer status in the SCO.
The spokesman said that the Iranian president will be taking part in the summit in accordance with SCO regulations and an agreement reached by member states allowing participation by observer states.
Ahmadinejad during this trip is scheduled to hold bilateral and multilateral meetings with senior officials of participating countries to discuss bilateral, regional and international developments.
Jiang said that topics likely to be discussed are the SCO's progress as well as key regional and international developments.
Strategies for future development of the organization will also be discussed, he said.
SCO's six member states have a total population of 1.455 billion, about a quarter of the world's total.
