Tuesday, 16 May 2006A leading Bangladeshi businessman has been arrested in the capital, Dhaka, in connection with an investigation into the smuggling of heroin to the UK.
Police say they detained Badruddoza Momin, chairman of BD Foods, at his home late on Sunday.
He is being questioned in connection with the smuggling of 75kg of heroin to the UK in several shipments since 2004.
BD Foods, one of Bangladesh's leading companies, has publicly denied being involved in heroin smuggling to the UK.
Police said the arrest of Mr Momin was made on the basis of information given by one of the managers of the company in a Dhaka court on Sunday.
Six other officials of BD Foods and its affiliated companies were arrested earlier after an investigation was launched into the company, at the request of the British Deputy High Commission in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay).
The request was made after several consignments of heroin were seized from two British ports last year, reports say.
The UK-based Observer newspaper said heroin valued at more than $18m was intercepted during a three-month period last year.
