US, Iraqi Forces Continue Anti-Rebel Sweep in Northern Iraq |
17 March 2006U.S. and Iraqi forces continued a vast sweep in northern Iraq Friday, hunting down suspected insurgents.
Some 1,500 U.S. and Iraqi troops descended on an area northeast of Samarra Thursday, capturing more than 30 suspected insurgents and at least six large weapons caches.
U.S. military officials say there has been no counter attack by insurgents.
The raid comes as Iraq's political leadership prepares to meet again in an effort to break a deadlock on forming a unity government.
Iraq's new parliament was sworn in Thursday in Baghdad. The long-delayed inaugural session lasted less than an hour. Lawmakers have yet to agree on the key posts of speaker and prime minister, and there is no sign of progress in talks aimed at breaking the impasse.
