US urges European allies to gut PKK |

Tuesday, 22 November 2005ANKARA - The U.S. administration is urging not only Denmark but also other European allies to cut off the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party's (PKK) propaganda and financial support in Europe, diplomatic sources said yesterday.
"The diplomatic notes to Denmark are part of a broader diplomatic initiative," one Western diplomat told The New Anatolian. "The U.S. administration is actively having regular consultations with several European capitals, urging them to cut off the PKK's resources," he said, adding that Turkey and the U.S. are working together closely to identify PKK affiliates in Europe.
The U.S. has conveyed at least two diplomatic notes to Copenhagen underlining that Roj-TV is part of the PKK. Diplomatic sources said that notes were delivered in early November before Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Copenhagen.
The Danish Foreign Ministry is to brief a parliamentary committee today on Roj-TV and U.S. initiatives.
Ankara is hopeful that Washington's new initiative will bring positive results. One Turkish diplomat pointed out that previously, PKK-affiliated Med-TV was banned from broadcasting in Britain, following a diplomatic initiative of the U.S.
However, some European diplomats said that a U.S. initiative will continue to have "limited practical value" unless they accompany it with intelligence sharing that will provide European governments with strong evidence to support cutting off the PKK's propaganda and financial support.
"The problem is no longer the lack of awareness by European governments of the terrorist character of the PKK, but the lack of evidence in supporting this argument before courts," one diplomat said. The New Anatolian |
