The United States (U.S.) launches initiatives to get Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos together.

There is an expectation that the meeting could take place at the beginning of the new year, probably in January.

The Turkish side had strongly supported the 2004 Annan Peace Plan. The US and the EU declared that the TRNC showed its willingness to reunite the island. And both promised to end isolation against the TRNC. However no concrete step has been taken since then. The EU in particular coninues its isolation policy towards the Turkish Cypriots.

There are 210,000 Turkish Cypriots on the island.
