4 March 2013USAK cordially invites you to the conference series “The Asia-Pacific in the 21st Century and Diplomacy”, each round of which is addressed by ambassadors of Asia-Pacific countries to Turkey. The eighth round of the event will take place on Thursday, March 7, 2013, from 2.00 to 3.30 p.m., with the participation of His Excellency Ambassador Mr. Bagas Hapsoro, Former Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN, as the keynote speaker.
As unique features of this eighth round, the speaker and the subsequent discussions will converge on the following headlines:
1. Indonesia’s relations with major powers: China, Japan and the US
2. Indonesia and ASEAN: Future prospects of the organization
3. Indonesia’s foreign relations within its neighborhood
4. Indonesia-Turkey relations
The eighth conference is designed for relevant individuals from various institutions including scholars, policymakers, state officials, NGO representatives, and interested experts. The conference will be held at the workshop hall of USAK House.

A short bio of the H.E. AmbassadorMr. Bagas Hapsoro (Former Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN)
ASEAN’s first Deputy Secretary-General for Community and Corporate Affairs (DSG CCA), Mr. BagasHapsoro, started his career as a diplomat in 1984, when he joined the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.
In 1987, he was posted to the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia in New York, USA as Third Secretary and Staff of Economic Affairs until 1991.
From 1994 to 1995, he served as the First Secretary and Head of Economic Affairs at the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Houston, Texas, before moving back to New York, where he served as the Counselor and Deputy for Head of Economic Affairs I until 1999.
In 1999, he returned to Indonesia to assume the post of Deputy Director for Economic Cooperation among Developing Countries at Indonesia’s Department of Foreign Affairs until 2001. In 2002, he moved to Geneva and was stationed at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia.
In March 2004-2006, he assumes the post of Secretary to the Director General of ASEAN Cooperation at the Department of Foreign Affairs. In 2006, he was appointed Director for ASEAN Dialogue Partners and Inter-Regional Cooperation, a post he served until 2007. He spent two years in Lebanon as Indonesia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in the republic.
Amidst his many responsibilities, he was often a guest lecturer at various higher learning institutions, both in Indonesia and abroad, specializing in international trade, security and negotiations. His passion for writing has also led him to publish various journals on peace and international security affairs.
In October 2009 his appointment was approved by the ASEAN Coordinating Council and on 7 December he assumed office at the ASEAN Secretariat. He assists the Secretary-General of ASEAN in managing the CCA Department of the ASEAN Secretariat to ensure that the Secretariat has the systems, procedures and resources required to fulfill its roles and mandates in building the ASEAN Community and in the implementation of the ASEAN Charter.
He is responsible for CCA Department’s performance in carrying out its core corporate support functions, such as human resource and financial management, administration and information technology. He also oversees the Department’s other supporting analytical services to operational areas, including the media and communications, outreach and legal functions.
Mr. Hapsoro was born in 1958, is fluent in Bahasa Indonesian and English, and is married with two daughters.
