Developing relations with Russia in the new strategic situation in Asia-Pacific, including the situation in the field of energy, meets Tokyo’s interests, said Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in a statement.
But he pointed out that he is still aware of major differences in the two countries’ stand on the South Kuril Islands. When speaking in parliament earlier today, he said that he would continue making efforts to settle the territorial dispute and conclude a peace treaty with Russia on that basis.
He added that he would persistently negotiate the issue and would seek a mutually acceptable solution. Shinzo Abe is slated to visit Moscow in late April.
