EU Staff to Leave Syria |
4 December 2012The European Union has decided to pull its diplomatic staff in Damascus over concerns about the worsening security situation in the country.
The decision came just hours after the UN said it was recalling a quarter of its auxiliary staff working in Syria.
25 of the 100 UN workers stationed in Syria are scheduled to leave before the end of this week.
According to various sources between 20,000 and 30,000 people have died in Syria since the armed conflict between the government and the opposition flared up in March 2011.
UN to pull staff out of Syria over growing danger
The United Nations is to pull non-essential staff out of Syria because of the growing conflict dangers and is restricting travel for those remaining.
A quarter of the 100 international staff still in Damascus could leave this week, some staff could be moved out of the northern city of Aleppo and travel outside the capital will be restricted.
"The UN has decided to send all non-essential international staff out of Syria and to halt all field trips outside of the capital for now," the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement.
According to various sources between 20,000 and 30,000 people have died in Syria since the armed conflict between the government and the opposition flared up in March 2011.
The government says its forces are battling well-armed rebel units assisted from abroad. |
