15 November 2012Turkish dailies on Thursday covered remarks by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on plans by an opposition party to erect a statue of the head of the PKK terrorist organization, world famous latin singer Jennifer Lopez's concert in Istanbul, an Israeli attack on Gaza, and the protests against austerity measures across Europe. The Anadolu Agency does not verify these stories and does not vouch for their accuracy.
"Everywhere in the world statues of dictators are being destroyed and their minds only think about building one. No need to worry, the statue will not get even a pedestal in this country" dailies quoted Erdogan as saying. Erdogan's remarks were in response to the opposition Peace and Democracy Party's suggestion to erect a statue of Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the PKK.
Jennifer Lopez gave a concert in Istanbul, her first in Turkey, which the dailies said "blew away her fans." She has changed 6 different outfits throughout her concert. "I did not know that I had so much fans in Turkey," daily SABAH quoted her saying.
Another topic covered by all Turkish newspapers was the attack of Israel on Gaza. Daily YENI SAFAK headlined, "Murderers are at work," saying "the Israeli massacre" killed nine people and wounded 49 others including children and women. An Israeli air strike killed leader of Hamas' military wing, Ahmed Jabari on Wednesday in Gaza. Israel stated that attacks will "extend and continue."
Daily HURRIYET said that 40 labour unions from 23 EU member countries staged demonstrations to protest austerity measures and spending cuts. The daily said protesters and police clashed in Spain. |
