Georgians Riled by Prisoner Torture, Beatings |
22 September 2012Thousands of college and university students will gather in downtown Tbilisi, Georgia, on Saturday to protest against reported cases of prison guards abusing their inmates.
Today is already the fourth day of public protests demanding the arrest of Interior Minister Bacho Akhalaya ,who is seen by many as the man behind the numerous cases of prisoners being beaten up and raped in a local jail.
A video containing the harrowing images was carried by local television on Tuesday, leading to the resignation of the head of the country’s prison system and the Interior Minister.
Four protesters were arrested on Friday after they allegedly tried to drive their cars through police cordons outside the Justice Ministry headquarters during an address there by President Mikhail Saakashvili. |
