Ministers of Five EU Countries Call for Ceasefire Agreement |
18 September 2012The FMs of five EU countries have called for the full implementation of the August 2008 ceasefire agreement. This was declared by the FMs of Latvia, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Romania and Bulgaria after a meeting with the EU observer mission in Georgia.
They were acquainted with the activity of EU Observation Mission in Georgia within 4 recent years. EU observers settled in the areas of Georgia-Abkhaz and Georgia-Ossetian conflict on the territories under control of official Tbilisi. In spite of international community calls, the separatists don't let observers to their territories.
Lithuanian Minister Audronus Ajubalis noted that the prolongation of EU Observation Mission for one more year is an important decision, as the mission happens to be the stabilizing factor. " The Mission fulfills its responsibilities and provides the lessening of tensions," he noted.
Ajubalis also expressed his thoughts on imposition of free transportation regime for local population in the conflict area and called EU countries upon activation of efforts in this direction.
The ministers consider that the withdrawal of Russian military forces from Georgian territories is necessary.
Military actions were launched in the Georgian territory, South Ossetia on Aug.8 in 2008. Later the Russian troops occupied the Tskhinvali city and drove the Georgian military back. Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in late August. In response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced two unrecognized republics as the occupied territories. |
