27 August 2012Recognition of Abkhazia's independence by Russia was a very important historical event, Abkhaz President Alexander Ankvab said at a meeting with Russia's Ambassador Plenipotentiary to Abkhazia Semyon Grigoryev on the occasion of the fourth anniversary since the republic's independence was recognized by Russia.
"This was not an easy decision for Russia," Ankvab said. "We know how difficult it was for Russia later, after making this decision, because the world powers did not like it. They knew that something serious happened in the contemporary history of the entire world, and there is no way to stop this process. Thus Russia demonstrated to the world that as a great power, it made independent decisions and will continue to do so," Ankvab said.
The main thing is that "Russia and Abkhazia have become strategic allies," Ankvab said. Russia's support "helps the republic stand on its feet, enables it to grow," he said.
