17 August 2012Russia proposes to establish a new UN Security Council deadline for ending the violence and launching peace talks in Syria. According to Russia’s UN permanent representative Vitaly Churkin, the corresponding text has already been distributed at the Security Council.
The conflicting sides are to cease military action by a given time, and put forward representatives entrusted with conducting inter-Syrian negotiations, said Churkin. They will tackle political settlement issues and establishment of a transitional governing body in the country.
The diplomat stressed that there should be tight deadlines.
This project will be up for discussion in New York, Friday, at a meeting of the Security Council at “action group” level. The latter includes representatives of UN Security Council permanent members and a number of states neighboring on Syria.
