Ecuadorean President to Decide on Assange |
14 August 2012President Rafael Correa of Ecuador has said that he will make a decision on whether Ecuador will grant political asylum to Julian Assange later this week.
The founder of the notorious WikiLeaks website asked for political asylum when he turned up at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London last month.
Sweden has been pressing for the extradition of Assange from Britain as a suspect in a rape and sexual harassment case. But Assange fears that Sweden may extradite him to the US where he may face capital punishment.
WikiLeaks published tens of thousands of documents about the US military’s moves in Iraq and Afghanistan, and posted US confidential diplomatic cables in November 2009. The cables contained uncomplimentary comment on world leaders. |
