Clinton in Turkey for Syria Talks |
11 August 2012US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has arrived in Turkey for talks on the worsening crisis in neighbouring Syria.
Mrs Clinton will meet Turkish leaders as well as Syrian opposition activists.
They are expected to discuss preparations for a transition of power in Syria if the government of President Bashar al-Assad falls.
The UN says there has been a surge in the number of civilians fleeing violence in Syria, especially from the northern city of Aleppo.
Turkey, like all of Syria's neighbours, is dealing with a growing humanitarian crisis as thousands of refugees flood across the border.
Rebels in Aleppo say they are preparing a counter-attack after withdrawing from the strategic south-west district of Salah al-Din under heavy bombardment.
UN must stay on in Syria - Ban Ki-moon
The UN should maintain its presence in Syria. In a letter sent to members of the Security Council on Friday, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says that flexible presence in Syria would ensure unbiased UN evaluation of the situation on the ground.
The mandate of the UN monitors in Syria expires on August 19. The future of the mission, which has been working in Syria since May, will be decided by the UN Security Council on August 16.
Syrian, Jordanian troops clash on border
Fighting involving armored vehicles broke out Friday night between Jordanian and Syrian troops in a border region, Reuters reports, citing Jordanian sources and an unnamed Syrian opposition activist who witnessed the incident.
The firefight in the Tel Shihab-Turra border area reportedly came after several Syrian refugees, fleeing the violence, tried to cross into neighboring Jordan. |
