Damascus Asks Moscow For Money |
6 August 2012Syria has requested a loan from ally Russia to soften the effects of Western sanctions.
The request was made public late on August 3.
Syrian Finance Minister Muhammad al-Julaylati said the loan was needed to help deal with Syria's economic crisis but he did not elaborate.
There was no immediate response from Moscow, but al-Julaylati said "Russia promised to consider this issue."
On August 4, the Russian newspaper "Moskovsky Komsomolets" cited Syrian Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Qadri Jamil as saying Damascus had asked for "a certain sum in hard currency" and also said "Russia has taken over the task of supporting Syria economically in the current situation."
Other Syrian officials with Jamil in Moscow said Syria also needs diesel oil and other oil products from Russia. |
