OIC Convenes for Myanmar |
6 August 2012The Organization of Islamic Cooperation's (OIC) executive board held an urgent meeting for the Rohingya Muslims.
Speaking at the meeting, OIC's Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu made a call to the whole world to remind them about the slaughter and ethnic cleansing that the Muslims of Myanmar faced.
"More than 90,000 Muslims have either been killed or displaced," Ihsanoglu stressed.
The tyranny against the Rohingya Muslims continues in a systematic way, Ihsanoglu said.
"I had made a call to place pressure on the military regime in Myanmar so that a law adopted in 1982 and one that took away the citizenship rights of Rohingya Muslims gets repealed. This unjustified law made the Rohingya Muslims foreigners in their own land. The law has opened the doors for all types of discrimination and pressure. Radical armed groups began a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya Muslims with the support of the regime and the government," Ihsanoglu stated.
More than 90,000 Muslims killed or displaced
"The international community has been silent on the crimes committed and pressure implemented in Arakan. Such a situation has caused great disappointment for us. The latest incidents showing that the regime continued activities of massacring the Rohingya Muslims began last June. More than 90,000 Muslims have either been killed or displaced in Arakan. Unfortunately, the numbers keep rising," Ihsanoglu said.
Criticizing the world for not showing any interest in the rights of Rohingya Muslims, Ihsanoglu stressed that they made efforts to unite groups of Rohingya Muslims believed to have around 24 separate organizations.
"We succeeded in bringing together these organizations under the name 'United Coordination Council'. Such a union made it possible to continue efforts for a peaceful co-existence, in democracy and based on human rights by one hand," Ihsanoglu said.
"It was the OIC that raised its voice first in the world in reaction to human rights violations of the Rohingya Muslims. Our efforts have brought the human rights violations in Myanmar to the attention of the international community," Ihsanoglu said.
Letter to Myanmar President
Ihsanoglu said that he sent a letter to the President of Myanmar and made a call to help the Rohingya Muslims.
I have also sent a letter to the opposition leader in Myanmar, Aung San Suu to express our deep concerns, Ihsanoglu added. |
