Bulgarian Opposition's No Confidence Vote Fails |
26 July 2012Bulgaria's ruling centrist-right GERB expectedly survived its fourth no confidence vote since it took over in 2009.
A total of 136 MPs supported the government, while 2 abstained and 72 voted in favor of the no-confidence motion on Thursday.
The opposition needed to gather 121 votes in order to topple the cabinet. GERB, which has 116 lawmakers in the 240-seat Parliament, enjoyed the support of 20 "independent" MPs.
The oppositional right-wing Blue Coalition and far-right Ataka decided to snub the vote.
The Bulgarian Socialist Party and the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms wanted to oust the GERB cabinet over what they perceive as its failure in the fields of judiciary and home affairs.
On July 18, the European Commission published a critical 5-year report for Bulgaria on the so-called Co-Operation and Verification Mechanism for Corruption and Organized Crime.
On the same day, five Israeli tourists and one Bulgarian bus driver were killed in the country's Black Sea city of Burgas. |
