Bulgaria President: Burgas Bus Bombing is European Problem |
21 July 2012Bulgaria must have a more adequate response to present-day security risks, according to President Rossen Plevneliev.
Plevneliev gave a press conference Friday in the Black Sea city of Varna, commenting on the July 18 deadly attack on a bus carrying Israeli tourists at the Burgas Airport.
The blast, so far believed to have been carried out by a suicide bomber, claimed the lives of seven and injured 23.
"What I can guarantee is that this horrible terrorist act will make the democratic world even stronger. The only way to be adequate to threats in the 21st century is to stay united," Bulgaria's head of state declared.
Stressing that Bulgaria was pursuing an exceptionally balanced foreign policy and was a good neighbor, he noted that the incident in Burgas was an indication that the country had to fine-tune certain systems in order to be up to the challenges of the 21st century.
Plevneliev went on to say that European Council President Herman van Rompuy and other European leaders had pointed out in their comments that "this is a European problem and it will be resolved using all the power, competence and solidarity of the European institutions."
On Thursday, Bulgaria's President scheduled a meeting of the Consultative Council on National Security (KSNS) for July 26. |
